Reflection:
The artifact used for this standard is the ELL (English Language Learners) lesson plan/report created for ITEC 7430. This artifact took place over a few weeks time period and was completed with a student I had previously has in my class. This activity was an individual activities and I created the materials and lesson pl for the student to work on reading comprehension.
The standard for differentiation includes the artifact being modeled and using design implementation of technology enhanced learning experiences. Differentiation means restructuring or configuring material to meet the students' needs based on adjusting content, process or even the learning environment. In the lesson plan, I completed an assessment on the student to see his current understanding of a reading comprehension passage. The main focus of the assignment was to help the student understand the author's purpose from a story and to be able to identify new vocabulary in a passage. Students who struggle with Rnglish may or may not always understand an implied author’s purpose in a text. It is a skill that has to be taught ad reviewed, while the vocabulary may just be confusing. For this student, he does a great job of being able to participate in discussion and share his opinion but struggles with unknown words.
This was a great assignment to complete because I felt that it helped me really define different ways to help my students because of how I focused on the students’ weakness in vocabulary building/understanding. It allowed me the opportunity to use some of the new emerging technology we have been discussing to share with my students. Honestly to improve the artifact, I would have spent more time on finding out the students’ favorite graphic novel to use it for a discussion point.
The work for this artifact impact student learning because the student is learning how to understand and decode unfamiliar vocabulary, especially in the language arts setting. On a larger scale, a bigger impact may be based on school improvement for all students and being able to use technology for differentiation. The impact can be assessed from a pre/post test to the student to see if any growth has happened over the course of instruction.
