5.1 Needs Assessment
Candidates conduct needs assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs. (PSC 5.1/ISTE 4a)

Reflection:
The artifact for this standard is a needs assessment that was created in ITEC 7460 for a teacher technology assessment. The purpose of this activity was to study, share, and evaluate a teacher’s current technology needs in the classroom and plan for upcoming projects in the classroom. This was a partner activity with my co-teacher which included a lot of planning, discussion, and self-reflection.
The standard for this activity includes that the candidate demonstrate the ability to conduct a needs-assessment to determine a current classroom situation. The second part of this standard includes being able to take the content and plan for the classroom. Based on the survey and discussion I have had with Mrs.Wright, it was blatantly obvious she wanted several different ways to incorporate technology because we just became 1:1 with Chromebooks. We discussed based on the surveys how she has used QR codes to have the students use centers but she wanted a more consistent presence of technology, such as incorporating Google Classroom. Once we would figure out what she needed for the classroom, we used a sheet to keep consistent track of the different ideas in her classroom. This activity meets the standard because we identified a need and work towards fixing the need.
One important idea that I learn from completing this activity was how the discussion between co-teachers is vital for success in the classroom. Being able to discuss different ideas with the use of technology to engage and improve our teaching in the classroom. It allowed for us to reflect upon our current teaching practices and how we can improve, especially including students with disabilities. One thing I would love to have improve the quality of the artifact is to have completed the survey myself to be able to understand it from a teacher’s perspective rather than a coach’s perspective.
This artifact impacts both faculty development and student learning. It affects faculty development because we were discussing how to implement more technology and reflect on our current practices which can impact student learning. Student learning will improve as we continuously improve on different applications for engagement in the classroom. The impact can be assessed with different observations throughout the course of the year and being able to reflect through learning in the co-teaching environment.
