This was a great opportunity to be able to reflect on my current practices in the classroom. Currently, this is the first year for my school to embrace the idea of one to one technology for students by utilizing chromebooks. While watching the video, when Alan November asked the question about how are we going to change our thinking to reflect on being able to have students change their questioning skills and how to encourage the students to become the masters of their own learning, it got me thinking about how I want to use this new technology in my resource classes. Therefore, I definitely agree how we need to change our thinking and encourage students to ask different questions to increase their awareness of the world and different applications.
There are so many different tools that can be used in the classroom to improve student learning and this course offers knowledge on several tools. I am most intrigued to learn about flipped classroom and how to effective use social media, especially twitter. I recently had a discussion with a colleague about doing a vlog on Google Classroom lessons for our Chrome Squad. I am so excited about using Youtube to be able to communication with others. THe idea of being able to collaborate virtually is very appealing because being in a co-teaching classroom. This would allow for better communication and a better education experience for the students. So I am excited for any type of information to make those relationships better for all those involved.
One way technology has changed something for Web 2.0 is being able to hyperlink the actual article for referencing, which is a neat tool for students to share resources and for teachers to check to see if references are actually useful or not (Anderson, 2018). Another way my teaching has changed has been to really start to personalized the lessons for my students and to really focus on areas that he/she may need extra assistance in. Technology is beginning to allow the students to create projects and experiences for a topic rather then just take a generic test. This type of learning can show mastery and for students who are not great testers, it allows for the teacher to know he or she understands the concept. One way to engage the learners is by allowing them to become the teachers and teach us how to use a certain program or application because they will have ownership in the activity.
My initial thoughts on using Web 2.0 is this is an application everyone is currently using and it can continue to be used from cellphones to chromebooks. Not everything has to be used for social media purpose and communication, there are so many applications and tools that can be used for effective research and collaboration (OEDB, 2018). The role of 21st century learning is increasing students’ progress in the classroom by focusing on their individual skills and provide various opportunities for learning. As mentioned before, students with various learning needs are getting different needs meet because of the different applications that can take place on the computer. It is just our goal, as educators, to ensure the learning is authentic and not just busy work.
