This lesson plan was definitely a labor of love. IT has made me realize and appreciate all the effort it takes to plan fun and engaging lessons. I am also very thankful for technology to increase my different learning opportunities for my students. All of the resources and materials are available in the lesson plan.
Out of all the classes that we have had the privilege of participating in, this is the first class that has presented information that I have been able to transfer into usage within the next day in my own classroom.
There have been so may different tools that we have learned about that I cannot wait to share with my fellow teachers that really enhance the learning experience for the students and teachers in the classroom. For some reason, this blog post is the hardest one I have had to write all semester. Reflecting upon one's own teaching is a skill that I need to work on because sometimes I do not like to be reminded of failures that I have endured in teaching. One program that I need to spend more time on creating would be Adobe Spark. I think this tool could really be a neat asset to my classroom if I can figure out how to do it without wasting so much time. Sometimes my brain deems to be an open web browser who just keeps adding tabs into it to make things better and better, but struggles to get all the information out effective to others. One thing that I need to improve upon for myself in the classroom is adequately planning the tools and using them in teh classroom. For example, Flipgrid is a great tool but I haven't used it like I should in the classroom. It just requires more planning and effort. I will continue to work on it in the future. As mentioned before, this was a great class that taught me so many things. I hope to share this with so many different people in my school. This class was a fantastic trip through a lot of information in such a short period of time. My district is currently starting to use and engage in technology in the classroom, therefore several of the projects required me to do some major research and understanding of how things work at the district level.
The use of the RSS project was very helpful because it has created different opportunity for myself to interact with others in the tech world. I have decided to work on my Google certification and possibly become an innovator (big goal). It is really cool to see how others use Flipgrid and more to work technology into their everyday classroom life. The ISTE standards are something that need to be considered when districts are starting to create their technology plans and I hope to encourage my central office of the importance of these standards for students and teachers. The different projects for this class included creating a shared vision, SWOT analysis, and an action/evaluation plan. This class was a great opportunity to be able to collaborate with others in the classroom based on learning and seeing what other districts are doing in regards to their classroom and technology. The hardest part of this class was creating the information after researching because there is not a lot of information for my district. I am hoping that I will be able to use the information that was created with my district official and create an edamp this upcoming summer. The evaluation plan is something that entails all the different things that we need to do to incorporate the use of technology to be able to help our students become digital citizens. The assignment of creating a grant was an excellent opportunity to create something that I actually plan on using for my Google Chrome Squad. It was a very helpful way to break down a document for explanation for something that can be very daunting to a teacher. This class was an awesome opportunity to hone my leadership skills and created awareness in myself for my district. It was an awesome class!! To keep students safe on the internet, we must model the behavior we expect our students to show. There are so many risks and unknowns that are out in the internet, it can be a awful place for the students. But with our help and process, students can use the internet to help explore the world in a positive light. Below are 2 websites for suggestions for teachers and then a video for students. 3 strategies:
These are three different tips that can help students succeed in the technology world. 10 suggestions for teaching Internet Safety- For Teachers For the first project, I have chosen the Noon day project which is supported by the K12 Science organization. The purpose of the project is to collaborate with other students to measure the circumference of the earth using a ruler and the sun, similar to how it was measures years and years ago. It connects to the curriculum of Earth’s science for 6th grade because of discussion of the sun and moon. The requirements are pretty easy, It just takes place in either March or September and the students follow the instructions. One thing for sure you have to do is to have another site from north to south to be able to get different numbers from different areas on the same day and same time. What is really neat is that there's not much technology needed besides basic math utensil besides sharing results. This is a very cool idea that can connect students in different country and be able to use information to answer a question. The second project is this is my country, by Projects by Jen. This is a really great website that gives so many different projects for students to be apart of during the course of the school year. This particular project is discussing your state and providing information for it via a flipgrid and then completing for trivia. It connects to my curriculum because of the speaking and listening goals for my kids to work upon and being able to work with others in a positive environment. The grade level is 6th grade The time requirement is between 1-2 weeks determine how you want your students to act/ present on it. THe timeline for the project is continuous but we would stick with a two week time limit. The technology tools are going to include chromebooks for Flipgrid and other research needed for the presentation. Global projects are very tempting to use in the classroom because of the collaboration and exploration for the students. There are several different things that have to be considered when completing the activity. The projects can be used to help foster your passions for any subject matter which means our students are going to get excited and want to learn. These projects cover so many different topics for working together and ideas. It is something that is going to teach students the future of the workforce. Some of the webtools to be used can be anything in Google, flipgrid and even padlet for collaboration. One of the challenges in creating a project would be the acceptance from others. But hopefully your passions with convince others to join your project! Google Tour The tour that I created is a brief example of using it to create for my 5th period. I am really excited to get to use it in the classroom. Out of all the modules, we have discussed this is my least favorite because it was not as useful except for the Google tours. Google tours is something that I can definitely use in my classroom today and I did use it. While I need to continue to work on creating my resources, it was neat to see the distance from one area to the next. Another observation is that some of the virtual worlds where a person can become another person is very creepy. The assigned readings were great because they make you think about and reflect on your own teaching in the classroom. Chris Dede shared in his article that his job is to ensure that our students not only succeed in the classroom but as well as the real-world applications, which is so true when understanding how to use virtual reality/environments in the classroom. Students deserve every opportunity to achieve their goals by being taught how to use the technology and to crave more then just completing a fun math game on the computer. Based on one of the videos we had to watch in the classroom module, these tools are need for students to be able to complete their classwork and homework. By having the use of technology, the students are able to collaborate via social media or Google docs. Students are able to use their creativity by creating field trips and creating new ideas that teachers may not even be aware of for lessons and it does provide a chance to use critical thinking/communication because of the impact of using all their information from different resource to get a goal accomplished. The video we watched describe the difficulties for students who are not able to have access to the technology and it does make a difference in their education because we want out students to be challenged. These tools are used to help students especially those who have difficulty maintaining prior knowledge because of being able to experience things through virtual field trips. This tool can be used greatly in the classroom as long as there is adequate training available for the teachers. The digital divide is between the teachers and students. Several of our students know a whole more about the technology then our teachers and there are teachers who refuse to use technology in the classroom because it is different then they are used to in the classroom. The teachers are either really excited to use the technology or do not care. This is based on the climate set by administrator, who are encouraging to those who participated but it needs to be on a more consistent basis. Up until this past year, our technology consisted of several old school laptop carts and some computers in the classroom , along with two computer labs. This seems to be true for several school systems in our area. We have become a one to one school with the ChromeBook and it has become an adjustment with both the students and teachers because of the training and expectation. The students are very used to use phones and such for research purposes that it can seem somewhat intimidating to use different programs such as Padlet or Nearod for instruction. Some of the strategies that I like to use include creating different opportunities that include using the resources that are free, which seems to be the biggest concern for our district, at this time. Having equitable access for our students is a concern because it means that everyone has some type of technology, which does not always seem to be the case for the students. At least in the classroom, the students have access to the computer which provides an opportunity to learn and identity different applications. The one thing I would like to do is for our country to have free for the county therefore the students could take their Chromebooks home to use and to learn from. Our system has a lot to improve from in this area.
The different tools that I shared via my screencast are ones that I really thought were a great addition to what Web 2.0 means in today’s classroom. When I was looking for different tools, I wanted things that I could definitely use with my class or my Chrome Squad. The Chrome Squad is my capstone project and I am always looking for anything that engage my students. Web 2.0 has made learning so much more fun especially for students with disabilities because computers have been a fun way for the students to engage in their learning. There are several resources that have been shared via our platform and one really great resource is Edshelf. Edshelf is a place that has different apps and reviews from other teachers. As a teacher, it is always much easier to use other teachers’ opinion then to “reinvent the wheel.” Another great option with Edshelf is that you can search for any type of application you may be looking for and then get a wide variety of options. The tools that I chose can definitely support students’ collaboration because they allow the students to be more in control of their own learning and I get to just support their efforts, as a coach. In my resource room, I struggle being able to always excite my students about completing assignments via paper form, but having them create something multimedia seems to spark some type of interest in them. In my screencast, I shared some of the advantages and disadvantages to several of the applications but one of the biggest disadvantages is when a teacher has to purchase a subscription because not everyone is willing to spend the money on a new and fun idea. BYOD is a very fun ways to let the students know that they are able to bring their own devices and use them in the classroom. I am in a middle school and we do not have a BYOD policy in my school. I have been in a classroom where the teachers has allowed the students to use the phone for research purpose but it has only been a very small amounts of time. BYOD is something that needs to be plan and carefully pursued in the classroom because it can help or hinder the digital learning experience for the students. One way I would like for it to be used in my classroom is to ensure that the actual technology standards will be meet based on wifi bandwidth and software that could be compatible will all of the students’ phones or devices (BYOD, 2018).Managing the BYOD is very similar to being able to manage the Chromebooks in the classroom. There are several different things that I would like to incorporate in the classroom. The BYOD needs to be able to enhance the learning experiences for the students in the classroom, not be a constant source of frustration for both the teachers and the students. Our current technology in the classroom is using Chromebooks. TO fix any of the issues, I have been using Google and the Chrome Store to be able to help identify and fix things. I am also guilty if asking our media specialist to help me. The video below is a great tool for some suggestions from our module on how to handle BYOD. The presentation that I made for this Spark requirement was about Edgar Allen Poe. In my 7th grade ELA class, we have started talking about foreshadowing and discussing Edgar Allen Poe because he does such a great job for suspense. Therefore I just went ahead created something that I can use with my kids, today. Overall it was a very easy application to use and I liked being able to five a 30 sec commentary on each slide and it made me really think about what I wanted to say to the students. The objectives I want to share with my students' was more reading comprehension based especially for the foreshadowing and author's purpose. These are more inferential questioning tactics that my students are beginning to work on through some really cool poems. One idea that I would like to use this application for is to have more students' creating introduction for different materials we are going to be covering, similar to project based learning that allows the standards to fit right into a project by introducing vocabulary and ideas before we really get to understand the material. This is a great idea for students with disabilities because it may work as a ray to remember material more because it is a fun way to create a presentation. Another idea for this application is to have students use this as a way to persuade someone to do something. Especially because Haikudeck shared that visual representation drives engagement in others, which may make their arguments stronger. When it comes to the Copyright and Creative Commons information, I plan on sharing this chart. This is a very important information to be shared with the students because it could make a difference wither or not they may get in trouble with the law. I had to watch the video several times to be able understand how it works with that particular video, but the message was pretty clear. Google Chrome Apps (ScreenCastify) Above is just a simple Screencastify that I completed based on two different apps for the Chromebook called Powerthesaurus and Grammar Checker by Ginger. Both of these resources can be used in the ELA classroom to help with writing for students. Based on the 4c's it falls under the c of communication and critical thinking because working on improving your writing is a skill all students to need learn and improve throughout the year. Both of these tools can be used to support differentiation by allowing the students to collaborate on group essays to their own essays and being able to fix the mistakes through the proof reading/editing process. This allows the students to have ownership of their projects. For students with disabilities this can help answer some of their questions with writing when the get stuck on a word or want to change the word so they are not going to be using the terms over and over. When reviewing the different apps, there were a few that were really going to be useful in the current classes I have or have been co-teaching in this semester. For the Office Apps, the two apps I have chosen were translator and class notebook which can be added through the Office store.
This was a great module. There are so many different programs that can be used to measure student achievement in the classroom. I am familiar with a few of the programs and use them on a consistent basis in the classroom such as KaHoot, Quizlet, and Nearpod. The idea of a flipped classroom is really interesting to me, as a resource teacher because I would like to have my students more in control of their own learning. The flipped classroom offers an opportunity for more collaboration between students because there is not need for waste of time (in a sense) for lecture. The students area already aware of the information and want to put it into action. From my observations, it seems as if we are having to change the instructional models to met the various needs of our students and some teachers embrace change, while others seem to run screaming in the opposite direction. In Tim Watson’s article, he talks about actually sharing your recorded lesson at the beginning of your lesson and then the student shave it for reference (Edutopia). I think this is a fantastic idea because the students can take the information and use it for review at home. He also makes a point to discuss how this can really help a teacher differentiate lessons in the classroom because you are able to identify and work with students on particular needs based on classroom assessment and observation (Edutopia). Web 2.0 is a way of communicating messages to students in a fun and impact ways. There are so many different assessment tools that can be sued to help differentiate instruction in the classroom. Screencasting allows for teachers to provide extra help for students in a control manner because it is brief and concise through the technology (ISTE). Other tools such as Nearpod can be used by students to help teach their peers in a group effort or study guide for peer tutoring (ISTE). We all know that if a student is able to redeliver the information, then he or she understand and has mastery of the subject. Another way to use Web 2.0 tools is to have the students complete a quiz and “then poll their feeling for understanding (EDTech).” This is such a great idea because it can allow for the students to share in a safe manner how they are processing information and can help determine whether or not he need some kind of remediation. Students with diverse needs are not just students who are considered to be special education students, these are the students who are considered gifted, as well. Using these different tools, a teacher can really challenge their students to complete several projects for mastery of performance standards then just completing the simple research project. As a special education teacher, I love using the technology because it makes the students get more excited about learning and in middle school that can be the biggest struggle of the day. Screencastify: Assessment Tools This was not my first time using this program because it was required in another class to share our overall project. This application is very easy to use and I definitely plan on using it in more classroom activities. Some of the activities I would like to use it includes sharing resources with my other SPED teachers, previewing vocabulary for my students in another class they struggle on a daily basis with, and providing extra teaching for students who may need it in the classroom. I am super excited to use this in the next couple of months!! |
